It is unclear to me the exact reference of this item. The reference to war-driven international financial transactions brings to mind the economic upheaval of the war; for example, GDP increased for the three major Allied countries (Britain, Italy, and U.S.), while other countries incurred debts and loans leading to political disadvantages and mass emigrations. This photograph eloquently illustrates the economic effect of WWI on Germany; by 1923, Germans were using their banknotes as wallpaper.
