ARMIES CLASH AT VERDUN IN GLOBE'S
GREATEST BATTLE
The Battle of Verdun was a siege by the Germans on the fortified area near the French city of Verdun-sur-Meuse. The longest battle of the First World War, Verdun marked the point when the German army switched its focus from the Eastern front of Russia to the Western front. Over a quarter million men were killed, and the battle evolved into a costly, lengthy stalemate that did not achieve its objectives.
